No Downtime Retrofit for Leading Parcel Carrier
Over the years, DMW&H has been involved with many projects requiring modifications to existing systems and is very comfortable with the challenges that accompany these ‘brownfield’ sites. Typically, work can be done in conjunction with existing operations but there is usually one extended period available for final tie-in of the old and new system. Recently we were presented with the challenge of a significant change to a system where we were tasked with extending multiple existing sort lines with one condition. We were allowed one six-hour shift per day to work but needed to ensure that the line was ready in the morning for sort. This included mechanical, electrical and controls work with no exceptions. Also, we had limited lay down area available for component storage and staging.
Along with our customer’s operations and maintenance personnel, the DMW&H team developed a detailed plan to bring equipment on site in a just-in-time fashion and segment the work into six-hour chunks. For example, one team would prep a conveyor section while another removed the existing end section. Then both teams would insert the new section, splice a new belt section to account for the increased length and track the belt before handing it back to operations for the morning sort. We followed a similar plan for modifying platforms, additional wiring, etc. In this manner, DMW&H added more than 30% more sort positions to the existing operation withing eight weeks and with 0% customer downtime.
